The Government of India has a Monopoly over the Indian railways. The Indian railways being the world’s 9th largest employer & India’s second largest employer, employs more than 1.2 million people each year. The recruitment notification for the second largest employer of the country has been released recently. The number of vacancies notified under the Railway Recruitment 2024 are 21500. Recruitments are to be made for different Railway zones including the Eastern, Western, Southern and Northern railways. Positions available under the recruitment notification are for Group D, Group C, NTPC, and Loco pilots.

Vacancy Details 

The vacancies in Indian railways are available across Eastern, Western, Southern and Northern railway zones. The categories for which vacancies are available are:

  • Railway Group D 
  • Railway Group C 
  • NTPC Railway 
  • Loco Pilot 

 

Eligibility Criteria 

There are various posts under 4 Railway zones for which the candidates can apply. The eligibility criteria for the same is discussed in detail here. 

 

Educational Qualification 

  • Railway Group D : A candidate who wishes to apply for this post must have passed 10th grade from a recognised board
  • Railway Group C : A candidate who wishes to apply for this post must have passed 12th grade from a recognised board 
  • NTPC : A candidate willing to apply for this post must have completed class 12th from a recognised board
  • Loco Pilot : a candidate who wishes to apply for this post must have completed 10th grade from a recognised board and must withhold an ITI certificate.

How to apply for Indian Railway Recruitment 2024? 

A candidate who wishes to apply under any of the post notified under Railway recruitment 2024 must follow the following steps: 

  • Visit the official website of Indian railways at https://indianrailways.gov.in
  • In the recruitment section select the vacancy link you want to apply for
  • Register yourself online by entering your name, mobile number & email ID 
  • During logging into your account use your login credentials sent to your phone number and email ID
  • Feel the application form carefully 
  • Check the application form for any mistakes 
  • Upload the necessary documents as instructed
  • Make the fee payment online using any online banking mode such as debit card, credit card, internet banking or E-Challan
  • Click on the submit button 
  • Download your application or take a printout for future use 

 

Application Fee 

Each candidate has to make a payment while applying for the respective posts 

  • For general and OBC category the fee is ₹50
  • For scheduled caste (SC), scheduled tribes (SC), and physically handicapped (PH) people, the registration fee is ₹250
  • For all the categories the fee that females have to pay is ₹250

 

Candidates must note that the fee payment can only be done in online mode by using a Debit card, Credit card, Internet banking or E-Challan

 

Selection Procedure 

  • Railway Group D 

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT) – this includes various multiple type questions on subject such as mathematics, general knowledge, reasoning & general science.
  2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET) – this is a test of a candidate’s physical capabilities. It includes lifting, carrying weights, running and other physical tests.
  3. Document Verification – candidates who qualify the CBT and PET testing proceed for document verification. If at the stage any document provided by the candidate is found to be false their candidature is canceled.

  • Railway Group C 

Railway Group C consists of technical and non technical positions such as junior engineers and technicians. The selection process for this post involves 

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT) – in this test a candidate is tested for technical knowledge and other non technical aspects. 
  2. Skill/Typing Test – the typing skills of a candidate is tested in the form of a practical exam depending on the nature of the position they apply for.
  3. Document Verification – candidates who qualify the CBT and Skill test proceed for document verification. If at the stage any document provided by the candidate is found to be false their candidature is canceled.
  • Railway NTPC

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT) – this includes various multiple type questions on subject such as mathematics, general knowledge, reasoning & general science.
  2. Typing Skill Test/CBT – in this test candidates are tested for their typing skills and fluency in computer skills.
  3. Document Verification – all the candidates who qualified the CBT and still test proceed for document verification.

 

  • Loco Pilot

  1. First Stage Computer Based Test (CBT) – this includes various multiple type questions on subjects such as mathematics, general knowledge, reasoning & general science.
  2. Second Stage Computer Based Test (CBT) – the second stage Computer Based test, tests the technical knowledge of the candidate.
  3. Computer Based Aptitude Test – this test is mandatory for all candidates apply for loco pilot.
  4. Document Verification – candidates who have qualified All the above three tests undergo document verification.

 

Preparation Tips 

  • The candidate must do their preparation according to the syllabus prescribed under the notification.
  • Practicing previous year question papers will help the candidate in better understanding of the exam.
  • All the candidates applying for any post of railways are suggested to maintain a good physical fitness specially for Group D candidates because the exam consists of a Physical Efficiency Test as well.
